What Is Graston® Technique?

The Graston Technique is a specialized soft tissue mobilization method that utilizes stainless steel instruments and proprietary techniques. It is commonly employed by chiropractors, physiotherapists, and some trained massage therapists.

This technique aims to break down scar tissue and adhesions in muscles, tendons, and ligaments, while increasing range of motion, reducing pain, and improving healing time. It is effective for treating various conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, and Achilles tendonitis, and can be applied to acute injuries or chronic conditions.

Administered by trained healthcare professionals, the Graston Technique may cause temporary soreness in the treated area, which typically subsides within a few days. Consult with our therapists trained in this technique to determine if it is suitable for your condition.

How Does it Work?

The Graston Technique can be described as a highly advanced and intensive form of manual therapy. Utilizing stainless steel tools, this technique is applied to the skin covering muscles, tendons, and ligaments, acting as a scar tissue stethoscope. Both the patient and healthcare professional can feel a constriction or gritty sensation when knots, bands, or scar tissue are encountered.

These limitations or adhesions can then be "broken up" using the specialized tool, followed by stretching exercises to realign the fibers and restore them to a more typical, healthy state. The Graston Technique effectively disintegrates collagen cross-links (scar tissue), stretches muscle fibers, and adherent connective tissue. Moreover, this method increases skin temperature and promotes enhanced blood flow to the treated area, facilitating a faster recovery.

Graston Soft Tissue Therapy offers several advantages, including reduced treatment time, faster rehabilitation and recovery, decreased reliance on anti-inflammatory medication, and resolution of chronic conditions previously thought to be permanent.

Why is Scar Tissue a Problem?

When the body heals from an injury, it forms layers of scar tissue. This tissue can restrict movement, congest the area, and impede blood flow, leading to pain, edema, and diminished joint and muscle function. The discomfort experienced during movement is often due to the binding effects of scar tissue.

At Reform Clinics, our patient-centered approach guides our healthcare team to understand and care for the whole patient by developing specialized, comprehensive treatment plans. The Graston Technique is most effective when used in conjunction with essential stretching and strengthening exercises, ensuring a well-rounded and effective recovery process.
